Let Me Know and Google Friend Connect

September 26th, 2009 Mohamed Sanaulla 2 comments

We had added “Google Friend Connect” gadget on the sidebar and got a really good response in terms of members. We currently have 400+ members connected through Google Friend Connect. We wanted to create a community around LetMeKnow and help visitors participate and connect with others. Developing a Social Networking component for LetMeKnow would lead to a fragmented effort for “connecting” people. What best was to make use of existing Social Networking components provided by Facebook, Google, Disqus among others. Keeping this in mind at first place we integrated Friend Connect and created a community around LetMeKnow. Recently we have integrated full fledged Google Friend Connect with following components-

  • Commenting on Each page
  • Recommending content to other readers
  • Rating and Reviews
  • A Social bar at the bottom

The Social bar mainly shows the Members list as well as the recent activity on the site by other members. Also the Feedback page has got a small makeover.

Opportunities turn me On!

DiggingDigginG ! DigginG!

This is what i do at LetMeKnow. Digg for student opportunities. A routine googlinG helped me discover LetMeKnow in October 2008. I subscribed for the updates and enjoyed the Content. Then i thought, why should’t I contribute to such a great student initiative. An itch began in me to suggest events. I suggested events frequently!  After few days I received a mail from letmeknow team asking if i was interested to join LetMeknow. I was really happy and excited to see that mail. I responded immediately expressing my interest to be a part of letmeknow. Sana sent me the guidelines of letmeknow. I still remember, it was around 1 am .I was preparing my first post at Letmeknow. We were using wordpress blog initially.I had no idea about the way wordpress works! I almost took half an hour to prepare one post bugging Sana every now and then!!! That started my journey with letmeknow in November 2008. It’s been a great experience working with letmeknow from then. The team is diversified with really cool people! It’s  really exciting  to work in a “Virtual team”!! After few months we migrated to a new site. Kudos to Abhinav and team at Grayscale! The new letmeknow site is awesome! The best user friendly site i have ever seen.

I really feel proud and happy to be a part of this team. I always wanted to do something in education space. And being at letmeknow is a great start! Coming from a not so reputed college and being among the tier-1 college crew is really a great experience! What more can i ask for!! It’s been more than 9 months I have been with letmeknow breaking the information barrier.

I have found my passion at LetMeKnow! Passion to explore. Passion to bridge the information gap and help students find opportunities. Every time i find an opportunity, the “Mr.Greed”in me turns violent!!! he asks for more….! more…!! This drives me to digg deeper & broader! I must say!!! Opportunities “TURN ME ON” !

Look forward world !  We will do it biGG ! I am sure LetMeKnow will be the best  ” OPPORTUNITY MINER” !

The Million Arts Project

September 14th, 2009 Prateik Pothuneedi 4 comments

A great thinker once remarked, “Never doubt a small group of dedicated individuals to change the world, because it is the only thing that ever has.” At the Million Arts Project, the founding team Prajakta Kharkar(India – Singapore), Aaron Timothy Kirunda (Uganda) and Aparna (Singapore) have proved him right through the impact they’ve had on the artisans and children of poverty stricken Uganda.

The Million Arts Project was started in Jan 2009 to promote poor artists by setting up virtual market places where they can interact with their customers and sell their products. The project has been promoting the ‘Milart’ Ugandan paper bead jewelry in Singapore using the power of e-commerce and Web 2.0. As more than 500 people develop these bead-ornaments, sizes and colours vary which makes every piece unique. Based out of Singapore, the initiative consistently provides a means of livelihood for the artisans of Kampala, making it a truly global venture. Income from the sale of this jewellery becomes medicine and food for these households and enables the women to send their children to schools. Most of these artisans belong to poor families which migrated to Kampala during the civil war which ended in 1986.

The vision of the Million Arts Project is to bring one million such art forms under their umbrella, thereby creating sustainable means of livelihood for artisans around the world.

Interested individuals can contribute to the project by applying for the Buddies Programme launched by the group.

Let Me Know being a student led initiative actively promotes student ventures. The National Social Entrepreneurship Forum was conceptualized with a vision to inspire people and organizations, who can effectively respond to social challenges to lead the movement for grass-root development. NSEF seeks to promote Social Entrepreneurship through various dimensions such as Internships, Fellowships, Social B-plan competitions, Mentorship, Workshops and Seminars. NSEF inaugurated Samriddhi, its first cell in IIM-Lucknow in August 2009 in association with  Abhiyaan, the Entrepreneurship cell at IIM-L. The first of its kind across any IIMs NSEF plans to start cells across India in collaboration with management schools and engineering colleges to provide different perspectives of the development sector to students . Currently NSEF is looking for Volunteers, who are share its vision and values to lead the movement. We hope that we can see more such organizations in future to promote and sustain the spirit of social entrepreneurship.

Going back in history- LetMeKnow as a blog

August 31st, 2009 Mohamed Sanaulla 3 comments

I happened to visit the LetMeKnow blog (http://letmeknow.wordpress.com) while i was looking our for help for my 4th semester project. The blog caught my attention at the first sight and i immediately wrote to the owner (then Nitin Rao, The Founder) that I am interested to join the team. It was in December 2007 and LetMeKnow had one member, the Founder himself. After a few days I got a mail from Nitin asking for details like my interests, why i would like to join and so on. Prior to this i had “0″ knowledge of Blog, Blogging, WordPress. I had heard these terms but wasn’t aware of how they work and what they are :D After I joined LMK (LetMeKnow)- WordPress, Blog, Blogging, Opportunities- all these were new to me. Also LMK was following a standard for the opportunities to be put up. I joined as a contributor adding posts in the Technical category. LMK blog had a “Ocean Mist” Theme then. Meanwhile we had Prabhu Hari already suggesting events (As he usually does and has been doing). Getting used to the WP (WordPress) interface wasn’t difficult. It has a clean and intuitive interface and the clear instructions from Nitin made my work easier and standardized.

Internships!

August 30th, 2009 Sarabjeet Singh 1 comment

Which firm should I work for? Should I visit a university abroad and work with a professor on an interesting research project? Does volunteering with a non-profit seem like a good idea? Can undergrad students get internship offers from at corporations abroad? Are there any summer research opportunities in India?  How about working at a start-up or a youth organization? I am a chemistry student; can I get an internship at an advertising firm?

As these questions hound students every year not just in India but across the world, training and placement cells, google searches and random surfing across websites of universities and corporations come to the rescue. Though these sources and several online portals have been useful, a one-stop solution for the indian student market still remains a dream.

At Let Me Know, we are trying to understand these concepts. Internships, which has been a recently initiated experiment at LMK, has proven to be a very popular category. Technology and Business are not far behind. Analytics and readership are showing us interesting patterns and we hope to deliver what the market wants.

BTW what are you doing next summer!

As I begin writing our first post at the Let Me Know blog, I want to take this opportunity to thank all our users for constantly inspiring us to improve our service and bring Let Me Know to where it stands today. The idea of this blog is to connect more interactively with all our readers and followers – share our journey and hear their experiences with the portal.

We also want to keep our users informed about what we plan to do in terms of creating richer content and better online experiences for them. I would urge all our readers to actively participate in the discussions that start here and share their views and opinions.
